Good morning Abbeydale School Families,
Well, in true Calgary fashion we’ve experienced another dose of Winter! Just a reminder that while the weather continues to fluctuate, we do go outside for recess/lunch every day unless the temperature is (-20) or below. Please make sure to check Environment Canada for updates on the ever-changing weather!
Please see more updates below:
Precautions for Solar Eclipse Monday, Apr. 8 (11:50 AM-1:50 PM No Outside Activities)
On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2 PM, with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 PM. We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner. While morning recess and first lunch will be able to go outside, there will be NO outside activities from 11:50 AM - 1:50 PM.
During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we would like to invite all students to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child. If students are not participating in educational activities around the event, schools may choose to have students will be involved in supervised indoor activities.
If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse.
During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.
For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
If you have further questions, please contact your school office.

- YW Calgary - COMPASS (Community Parent & School Support Program)
- CIWA (Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association)
- Eastside Memorial Football Club
Hope to see you there, don’t miss out!
Non-Instructional Day (Apr. 19)
There will be NO school on Friday, Apr. 19.
Cell Phones & Other Home Items
We are currently in the midst of creating a School Cell Phone Policy, which will be communicated in the coming months. We want to remind parents that personal items, such as cell phones should not be out at school. Cell phones are a distraction to learning and can often times become lost, damaged or stolen. Other personal belongings, such as trading cards and other toys should remain at home.
New Bell Times (2024 - 25 School Year)
We will have a slight shift in bell times next year. Please see below:
- Monday-Thursday (8:00 AM - 2:40 PM *remains the same)
- Friday (8:00 AM-12:00 PM *will be different from 2023-24)
